Bernie Tyson headed off on his daily walk and was never seen again.
Between 9am and 10am on Wednesday 16 October 2019 Bernie left his residence at House 3 Urapunga Community to go on his daily walk into nearby bushland.
He was seen leaving the community on foot and was last seen near the vicinity of the old abattoir. At that time he was dressed in a light coloured t-shirt or collared shirt, black coloured shorts, wearing thongs and carrying a black Mission Australia bag.
His direction of travel was reported to be along the fence-line of the Urapunga Airstrip in a westerly direction.
His eldest son, Heston, had purchased a tin of Log Cabin tobacco for his father from the local community store earlier that morning and he departed the community likely carrying with him provisions for the day, including a tin of meat and an unknown quantity of water.
Bernie was known to walk daily but never overnight, and always returned before the end of the day.
Bernie’s sons became concerned when their father did not return that evening and began a search with assistance from local community members, after sighting a fire up on the escarpment area to the north-west of the community.
Police were notified the following morning and despite an extensive five day search by air, land, and water Bernie was never found.
The weather on the day Bernie went missing and the following days during the search were extreme, with daytime temperatures exceeding 40 degrees with no rain and high humidity.
