New pedestrian safety campaign hatched in Darwin

Why did the chicken cross the road? To remind you to stay safe, of course!

Why did the chicken cross the road? To remind people to stay safe, of course! Crime Stoppers NT is excited to announce the launch of a new pedestrian road safety campaign in Darwin, made possible by a grant from the Darwin City Council.

Inspired by the age-old joke, the campaign puts a playful twist on a serious message: stay alert and avoid distractions, especially mobile phones, when crossing the road. Eye-catching posters featuring a number of feathered friends will soon be appearing in local pubs and clubs and supported by a robust social media blitz.

“Our campaign takes a fun, light-hearted approach to what in reality is a serious and critical issue for pedestrians in Darwin,” said Catherine Phillips, Chair of Crime Stoppers NT.

“With chickens reminding us about the need to cross the road safely, our aim is to engage the Darwin community in a memorable and impactful way.”

“A reminder about road safety is particularly relevant at this time of the year, because there are plenty of locals and tourists out soaking up the tropical weather and enjoying the many community events, markets and festivals on offer throughout the Dry Season.”

The campaign specifically targets pedestrians and motorists, addressing the unique road safety challenges of the Darwin community, particularly the alarming overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in road crashes and pedestrian injuries.

“We’re determined to make our roads safer for everyone,” Ms Phillips said.

“Using humour and the universal dilemma of why the chicken crossed the road, our hope is to cut through the noise and deliver a message that sticks: stay off your phone, look out for cars before crossing and stay safe!”

So, if you spot a chicken poster reminding you that “Playing chicken could end your life” or “Don’t wing it when it comes to safety”, remember it’s all part of our mission to reduce road trauma and keep people safe.
